Chris- I think you have hit DC coldness right on the head. Courtesy is as dead as Julius Caesar

It’s not like DC has a lock on this. If you go to London, you’ll experience the same thing. I don’t think it’s rudeness so much as the realities of living in limited space and time. By all means, become a change agent and work your magic. Nothing precludes you from it. Best o’ luck and congrats on the dcblogs.com listing.

I have to agree – DC sure isn’t the only guilty city. I think it’s part of the nature of all big cities, NYC, London, Rome, Berlin, Omaha. Even so, would an occasional “Pardon me” kill people? Come on, people. It’s not that hard.

I have the exact same feeling when we go up to visit my husband’s family in CT. They live in a small town and everybody is just so nice. I guess living in big cities with horrendous commutes and general time crunch, we barely have time for ourselves, let alone others.

You’re absolutely right. We barely have time for ourselves, let alone others. Still, that’s no excuse. Simple, common courtesy. Say hello to the security guard in your building rather than just walking by. Look one new person in the eye and smile. Very little incremental effort…

Actually, I have to disagree, although not completely. If you live in the District, life is much slower, and much more courteous. My life is not particularly regimented nor rushed, since I have such a short commute and I don’t drive. I have daily, pleasant conversations with the people at the corner grocery, the wine store guy, the people behind at the counter at Starbucks/Love Cafe/Jolt-n-Bolt/. People even hold doors open. Admittedly, strangers on the street or metro don’t say hello, because that is insane: you pass hundreds, maybe thousands of people a day in a city. But when I do interact, I find people pleasant and polite.

Most of the stressful rushing around is done by the denizens of the suburbs. When you sit in horrible traffic with rude people for a couple hours a day, you are in no mood to make small talk to the woman at CVS. Been there, done that, moved into the city.

There are a myriad of valid reasons/excuses for our disassociation with one another. A lot of us are feeling this loss of a community sense and want to change.

But change requires deliberate decisions most times. Big or small. Pick up the family and move or make a concerted effort to be kind to the mailman. Whatever.
Decide. Act. Take responsibility for our own little corners of the world. Be aware of our energy expenditures….how much goes toward things immediately or cumulatively positive… negative? Adjust as desired.
Human kindness – an undervalued/underpracticed commodity!

  9. [...] Last week I posted an essay about people being nicer once they get away beyond the gravity of DC. It’s really a commentary on the hustle and bustle of all cities, not just DC. It was picked up by DC Blogs, a clearinghouse of blogs that are by, for, about, or thinking of DC. I read it all the time. As a result, I got a bunch of comments and that was really cool. They ranged from, “You nailed it,? to “Now hold your horses…? Everyone’s points are well taken. [...]
