I met with a real live, successful screenwriter on Friday night. Here’s the story: I was contacted last week by one of the team members from the 1980 US Naval Academy crew team through this site. It turns out that members of that crew have been advocating that a movie be made about them. They came out of nowhere to win the national championship that year. They were not the biggest, but that year they were the best. My brother was captain of the crew team that year. It’s a truly inspiring story.
It turns out that the screenwriter working on the script is the real deal, having written the scripts for Point Break, Patriot Games and Varsity Blues, among others. On top of being a successful writer, he was a genuinely nice guy. He’d been in town doing research and spending time with other members and the coach of the 1980 crew team in Annapolis and was headed up to Philadelphia to see the Army-Navy game on Saturday.
He wanted to meet with us to gather background for our brother, so my sisters and I met with him at the Hilton nearby and we talked about Steve for several hours. It was a lot of fun and I walked away from the meeting feeling really good on any number of levels. He’s trying to tell a great story, a hero story, an underdog story, an inspiring story. I hope he succeeds.
I left him with a copy of my book, Requiem, my business card, and a standing offer to help in any way that I can. The whole thing was pretty cool and I hope it’s wildly successful.
See you on the red carpet.
